Yesterday the almost-hurricane Irene struck. At night. More in the very early morning. We didn't have power for most of today.

So I turn on my computer today, when we finally have both power and an Internet connection, and the fucking screen is black. Everything else seems to run normally. At first there wasn't any noise. Then when I turned it off and on, there was noise like it was booting up, but still it was black. Now I think it may be worse, because the wireless switch thing that turns from red to blue and the audio button thing that does the same thing are no longer turning blue. They're staying red.

Looked it up on other people's computers. Am lucky that my sister is reliving childhood through a Pokemon game. No idea what the problem is. Could be the computer, some cables, the screen, or everything. It could even be that rain got into it- some of it was coming in. Though that's happened before without giving me a black screen. Tried disconnecting it and holding the power button for 30-60 seconds, pressing the F5+F10 buttons, Did not help.

Considering that the issue started after a power outage, sounds like there was a power surge right as the power died.

Given that, and the symptoms which resemble insufficient power across different types of hardware, the most likely possibility is that the power supply was damaged and will need to be replaced.

Oh it's a laptop, so does the same thing apply? Everyone else's laptops worked fine.

It actually started working again, after some repeated tries of turning it off, disconnecting it without a battery, and holding the power button down for 30-60 seconds.

Now something else is wrong, but I don't know what or how. Last week's browser history is gone, and my user account password was different- I had to change it from my other user account. Then there is a problem with Norton. I've been trying to do a backup all morning just in case.

Thank you for reading and responding. :)

A likely power surge applies if it was plugged in at the time of the outage, especially if it was turned on or charging. As long as it's working again, backing up your hard drive, reformatting, and crossing your fingers that there won't be any more hardware issues is probably the best you can do.

You're welcome. What are random fellow fandom members for? :)
