Black Magician Trilogy - Trudi Canavan
Fanfiction, Fanart
Akkarin/Sonea (Black Magician Trilogy)
I always loved them and still do upon reread. From the pre-relationship stuff—like his watching her and being excited by her potential, her surprising him by choosing to learn black magic and her thinking how he never looked down on her origins, the amusing domesticity when she decided to make plant beds for them in the waste—to the actual relationship, with all the cuddling (enjoy how she initiated their first kiss, yet he is usually the one to start the hugging and holding), how they have all these sweet moments despite also often having to discuss an awful situation. It's like their relationship itself is an oasis supporting them against this terrible time in their lives, which is simultaneously opening up futures they didn't expect. Not every possibility in that future was fulfilled—Akkarin did die, after all—but they were accepted at last, and he did get to do some personal healing, and Sonea got to save her people in a way that ensured her future among them. I'd enjoy anything from pre-relationship interactions to more conversations during, or smut, or other kinds of intimacy. What if they hadn't been exposed to the Guild until later? What would the Warrior lessons he promised to give her have been like? Or what if he'd lived and they both had to find a place in the Guild together? How goes the talk upon discovering Sonea's pregnancy? Also, in the third book Savara says her people were looking for him in Sachaka, to help him take Kyralia back; given what we learn in the later books about who has his third (fourth, once he makes one for Sonea) blood gem, how was that meant to work out, and what if they had found him? I'd enjoy a snippet of his and Sonea's relationship in that context. Oh, and the ring Sonea made for him, which he never wore except for that one moment he used to send her a naughty thought—did Sonea leave it with him, bury him with it? If not, did she save it and keep it to herself, or did she give it to their son?
Solo: Sonea (Black Magician Trilogy)
I love her so much! She has such a hard time of it, but I love that she's able to start fulfilling her goals by the end of the series, and that the events have led to other things she wanted and which needed to happen, like the end of the Purge. I'd love to see her finding her place in the Guild and in the city, dealing with the love from her people and the various aspects of becoming a Higher Magician at a young age out of necessity, and having to navigate politics, to which she is not accustomed. What were those first Higher Magician meetings like? Also, she takes issue with the king—for good reason—throughout all three books, while (per Lorlen) the king had believed she would be easily swayed by him and accept staying with the Guild while they exiled Akkarin. Then Akkarin has her be the one save Merin, which at least to me seemed like a way to get her to score some political points, not just him trying to perform a Kyralian magician's duty. She was so annoyed he’d asked her to do it, thinking he should’ve done it himself instead! I'd be curious to see Sonea interact with the king after this last book, or to get an outside pov look at her saving him. And then there's her pregnancy—how does she come to terms with being a mother? I'd love to see everyday moments of her handling things with Jonna's support, and with Rothen's. Maybe finding out more about how her mother did it with Jonna too.
Traitor Spy Trilogy - Trudi Canavan

Nikea & Sonea (Traitor Spy Trilogy)
I love the bond between the Healers and hospice helpers and their attachment to Sonea. I'd love to see more of the everyday workings of the hospices in the slums, and of the small interactions which contributed to their willingness to support Sonea in doing what she needs to do! Particularly with Healer Nikea, who seems to have quite a bit of initiative. Show me this relationship develop, or snippets of it in the future while Sonea works on treating people for roet! I’d love to see Nikea being mentored by Sonea, and/or perhaps them teaming up to mentor newer Healers or hospice helpers. Sonea spent so much time being guided, and now she is the one to guide and lead; I’d love to have more of that in the context of her daily work, aside from relying on her workers to help her with side quests.
Lilia & Sonea (Traitor Spy Trilogy)
I enjoy the way Lilia's storyline turns out, but I also really wanted to see Sonea be a mentor! Especially since, according to one of Lilia's point of view chapters, she admires Sonea and has an inclination towards healing. The plot does imply Lilia also has a talent with black/higher magic, and she might end up stonemaking in the future. I wonder, since higher magic is about sensing/using the relationship of magic to the body/matter in general, and healing has to do with using magic to sense and connect with the body—could they have some things in common that might lead to interesting conversations? Or maybe, if they could teach each other things from their respective areas? Even if not a lot, since both healing and stonemaking seem to require a lot of dedication and skill. Or just show them having conversations and having a bond! Maybe Lilia tells Sonea about how she handles Bokin?
Lady Vinara & Sonea (Traitor Spy Trilogy)
These ladies seem to be having a friendly professional rivarly! I liked Lady Vinara's occasional distant support of Sonea in the first trilogy, and she did decide at the end of it to be one of Sonea's teachers. At the beginning of this one, Sonea is not wholly comfortable speaking her mind among the Higher Magicians, but Vinara does take the time to encourage to do it more often afterwards, so we can see that inclination for support is there. Plus, Vinara sends novices to Sonea to learn non-magical healing and why it’s still necessary! There’s a professional respect. At the same time, Sonea later thinks that she knows Vinara is keeping some of the best healers to herself (in regards to Merria); additionally, Vinara wants to protest when Osen tells her to work with Sonea on the cure for roet, and Osen also says it's time for them to be seen working together. They do run separate areas—Vinara the old Healer's Quarters that charges people, Sonea the hospices in the poorest parts of the city—and we do see that Vinara was secretly trying to get roet for a cure despite not officially considering the addiction a disease; meanwhile Sonea was secretly treating a man for it, trying to see if and how it could be cured. I'd love to see any of their past interactions as mentor/student, or fellow leaders in the Guild, being as they are both respected and looked up to by other Healers.
Solo: Sonea
I've already put a lot in the & prompts above, but Sonea! I love that she's achieved so much by the beginning of this trilogy, what with not just running the hospices she wanted, but also advancing the field of healing by supporting the study and use of nonmagical healing for the first time in centuries. Her ambition to bring healing to the masses was already something, but she scaled things up further! With support, of course, and collective effort. I'd love to see her bonding and working with the Healers who decided to give all this a chance with her, and help to make these things reality, and with the hospice helpers who decided to contribute. Love Rothen's suggestion that even Healers who don't work with the poor now feel a duty to help those who can't pay for it, if they happen to come across such a person, thanks to her influence. Impact! I'd love to see her working on the cure for roet, now that her discovery of it being an issue has been validated. Or something about her changing relationships to the Guild and its magicians. She clearly didn't expect the automatic support she received when trying to catch Lorandra at the end of the first book, when even magicians who weren't Healers just decided to join up and trust she knew what she was doing, despite her breaking rules by being there. And that bit at the beginning of the third book, when she's chosen as a special ambassador to negotiate for the new magic and Lorkin's release, followed by everyone in the Guild choosing to donate their power and reassure her of their support! It's like The Prom episode in Buffy! And such a lovely reversal of how she and Akkarin were treated when exiled. The Guild still isn't perfect—recall how Lorkin was bullied for Sonea's origins and for Sonea not marrying his father—but at least her position in it is different, and she has played a part in it changing. Now she's directing part of those changes again at the end of the book, together with the other Higher Magicians; I'd love to see a snippet of them debating how to adapt to foreign magicians, whether from the new Sachaka or from lands more unknown, like Lorandra's. Lastly, I was so affected by that scene early on at Akkarin's grave. Particularly that bit where she thinks about how Lorkin was begrudgingly acknowledged on Akkarin's gravestone, but she wasn't and never would be, because his family wouldn't allow it. I'd love a story which showed some way she could feel acknowledged as having been part of his life, whether it's to do with the tombstone—maybe Lorkin being consort to an ambassador and eventually a queen of another land would have more sway than the rest of his blood relatives on his father's side?—or something else. Show me how!
Lorkin & Sonea (Traitor Spy Trilogy)
Upon reread, they talk a lot more than I remembered, but I still wanted more interactions! I feel like many of their scenes were about plot and exposition, and would love more time where they could just be warm, or conflicted but still loving. Let Sonea give him the hug she keeps wanting to give him! What about the time he said he'd like to spend with her before she left Sachaka? What do they do or talk about? Does he get to introduce her to Tyvara? What about communications after she leaves, since he wouldn't have to worry as much about keeping the communication secret? I'd also love to see more of them pre-trilogy. He was bullied over her origins and her not being able to marry Akkarin; how did the first conversation over that go? And Sonea tells Regin that part of her never marrying is because of how Lorkin was jealous of any man in her life; show me one of those incidents? My impression was that she hadn't seriously considered romantic love after Akkarin until this story took place, but maybe she took a lover or two just to try it out, or enjoy some company? And then dealt with Lorkin's feelings about it. Or show me her foiling Akkarin's family's plans to get Lorkin engaged to someone; only upon being sure Lorkin wasn't interested, of course. Or maybe one of those times when Dannyl and Tayend would visit, and Tayend would get on well with Lorkin, as Dannyl remembers?
Dannyl & Sonea (Traitor Spy Trilogy)
These two ended up having parallel stories in both trilogies! In the first, Sonea lost a lover, Dannyl gained one, and they both grew up into a place in the Guild. In this one, Sonea gains a lover, Dannyl loses one (but is maybe on a path to regain the old one), and they both find new work and change ahead in their roles as part of the Guild. I always liked that though Dannyl was wary of Sonea in the first books, he did give her meaningful emotional support by not tearing her robes or speaking the banishment words when she was exiled. And his experiences with being bullied and isolated as a novice foreshadowed hers. Here he is scared of her again, but also he used to go visit her and her child on a regular enough basis. It was really interesting to me how the books ended with Sonea having to re-experience her trauma through feeling Dannyl's own, and that he had to go through that while sharing more of his feelings than he would have chosen to do. I don't know if they would or even could ever talk about this, but I liked Sonea's immediate empathy—she would never have wanted him to go watch for her if she'd thought he might have to watch a lover die—and wonder if she ever found a way to convey it through any kind of support, or whether Dannyl will ever reflect that they've gone through similar experiences with this. I'd like to see any interactions before she leaves Sachaka, or when Dannyl comes back to visit Kyralia, as ambassadors do. Or something from earlier times, when he and Tayend were still visiting her and Lorkin.
Regin/Sonea (Traitor Spy Trilogy)
I was intrigued by this ship. He was so awful to her before; he didn't even treat her like a person. My last reread of the first trilogy took a long time mainly because that was so stressful to read. I became interested in how this time around, he seems to have invested in her as a person before she's even very aware of him. He was very intense about her deserving more trust from the Guild and to be less constrained by it, and he wanted her to know it. I also like that his insistence on following her around in Sachaka echoes her insistence of following Akkarin. (Though Regin is more manipulative about making the situation happen in the first place, not telling her he was divorced so she wouldn't pull away while he tried to feel out the possibility for a relationship.) Some of their interactions are funny, like their first stop at an inn when they had to share a room. On Sonea's side, I think she starts to want to trust him quite soon, like when she momentarily thinks he knows about what happened to Lorkin (in the first book) and is being considerate about it. In part I feel she must just want to be able to confide in more people about what's going on—and we can see that inclination when she accidentally lets some things slip about the mission in the third book as they talk—but would she really have kept him pushed away if he'd been open with her about his newly single status? How does it feel for her to embark on a new relationship after all this time, and be able to confide in someone within the context of an intimate relationship, as she's done about Cery's death in the epilogue? Also, she mentions in the first book that he'd spoken out in support of her sometimes in the past, and he later says he's admired her for a long time; I'd love a pre-relationship look at one of those instances, with him supporting her, and it being possible for a reader to see his admiration of her even if she herself doesn't see it yet.
The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club – Theodora Goss
Fanfiction
Justine Frankenstein & Diana Hyde & Mary Jekyll & Catherine Moreau & Beatrice Rappacini & Lucinda Van Helsing (Athena Club)
Alice & Any Member(s) of the Athena Club (Athena Club)
I really enjoy the interplay of dynamics when they have an adventure; would love a casefic where they take something on, or a slice of life including a peek at a case, perhaps one of those alluded to when they comment on Catherine’s writing of the main story. Maybe a meeting! Or a less eventful slice of life, when they’re just hanging out, or interrupting one of the others while they try to work or practice a hobby; such are the things that happen when you live with other people, especially eight of them! (Once you add Mrs. Poole.) Just monster women being monster women (and detectives, writers, painters, gardeners, intellectuals, mesmerists, and so on). What about five times a comment or exchange of dialogue didn’t make it into Catherine’s writing? Focus on any combination of the club members you want, whether it’s all of them or any two (and/or Mrs. Poole, if you like). I love when they get into it about women’s rights in their own ways, and their feelings about monstrousness, or when they end up finding value in the attributes of the member(s) with whom they feel they have the least in common usually. Also, feel free to bring up/include their canon ships, or ship them with each other (except Diana/Mary).
Ayesha & Beatrice Rappacini (Athena Club)
I find it really interesting that after everything they learned, Beatrice chose to stay and try to regulate the alchemical society’s experiments from an ethical perspective, though she’d be the only person there trying to have that influence. What is a day’s work there like for her, and how does communication with Ayesha go? For Ayesha’s part, she is absolutely fascinating and I love her ambiguity both as someone who both respects the monster women as interesting, strong people and as someone who doesn’t find ethics to be very relevant to the experimentations of the society, even if she does want to keep that experimentation under more control than the various “mad” scientists in the books wanted to accept. What is it like for her to have Beatrice join the society—by Ayesha’s own invitation—and function as part of it? I’d love to see them come into disagreement, or to an understanding, whether in an intellectual manner or based on their personal experiences.
Mary Jekyll/Sherlock Holmes (Athena Club)
I ended up finding this very sweet! Though I also liked the tension in the dynamics: Mary wanting to push back on Holmes taking over their cases, as helpful as he and his resources could be, and trying to balance things so he couldn’t. I’d love a look at future collaborations now that they have actually begun a relationship; how would they work together now? Emotions can add new dimensions, but then again, they already cared for each other and are relatively rational people. Or how about some (more) pre-relationship pining? Five times one of them subtly acted (or reacted) on their feelings and the other didn’t notice the motive behind the body language (or what they said or did). More Mary at Sherlock’s bedside as he recovers, after he wakes up the third book.
Thank you for checking out my requests! I hope it was fun, and that you enjoy the exchange!
