Today(or should I say yesterday?) I visited a bioluminiscent lagoon. It wasn't as good as it would have been had I visited during a new moon, but it was lovely.

We had to go by kayak. I got paired up with this French tourist who couldn't understand Spanish, so I went with him, because I knew English and had no partner. It was kind of tiring, and the constant paddling was a bit monotonous, but it was also funny listening to the other people crashing into each other and having other problems. My partner and I tended to crash a bit too, though. The water was warm and salty, even hot in some places, and it splashed into my eyes as we paddled.

We paddled along through the channel in the dark, with the occasional moonlight seeping through. It was kind of creepy and atmospheric, which I loved. Finally, we reached the lagoon. The view was splendid in the moonlight. Unfortunately, the moonlight meant that we could only see a little bit of the glow produced by the lagoon's creatures. But if you dipped your hand in the warm water and stirred it, a greenish glow would appear and swirl around your it.

The glow was produced by phytoplankton, the guide said, and places like this are supposed to be really rare. It all depends on a delicate balance, of just the right amount of rain and salt.

We stayed there for a while, but eventually left. By that time, my arms were definitely aching and tired, so I was glad to reach the shore, where I immediately slipped and landed on my bottom. My sandals were too difficult to walk in, so I tripped over them.

Finally, salty fresh and sandy, I went home for a shower.

Sounds like you had a good time, despite the sore arms!

My husband and I wanted to take an excursion to one of those lagoons. It was an offered activity on our honeymoon, but it was all booked up. Our cruise ship was docked in San Juan, so we just walked around the city and got dinner there.

San Juan was really beautiful. One of these days, we'll take a trip to the Caribbean and spend more time exploring. Cruises don't give you enough time to do anything, so I doubt we'll take one again.
